Karachi
Four men allegedly involved in extortion and robberies were killed in encounters with the police in Metroville and Gulshan-e-Iqbal on Wednesday.
In the Metroville locality of SITE Area, two alleged extortionists were gunned down by the police for extorting money from a K-Electric official.
SITE police officials said “the extortionists belonged to banned militant organisations”. They said the police had also seized two TT pistols and a motorcycle from the suspects.
Karachi police chief Shahid Hayat announced awarding Rs200,000 and commendation certificates to the police party that had killed the suspects.
SITE Superintendent of Police Fida Hussain said the suspects were identified as 24-year-old Shahid-ur-Rehman and 22-year-old Akbar Ali. He said an investigation was under way to find out more about their gang and make further arrests.
A spokesman for the Karachi police said a K-Electric employee, whose name was withheld over security reasons and who resided near the D-1 bus stop in Sher Shah, was being harassed for paying extortion money for quite some time.
“Today the extortionists finally called him to pay Rs500,000. The complainant immediately informed the police, who despatched a police party to arrest the criminals,” added the spokesman.
According to him, the “extortionists” had been threatening the complainant and had also sent him live bullets. The complainant was asked to bring the money to Banaras Chowk.
“When the complainant arrived there, the extortionists told him to come to a mall near Valika Chowrangi. Then he was ordered to reach Metroville and stand by a parked rickshaw.”
While the K-Electric employee was standing there, two suspects approached him, showed him their pistols and collected the money from him.
The police party immediately tried to arrest the suspects, but they opened fire on the law enforcers, who retaliated and killed both of them on the spot.
The spokesman said important

information was expected to be obtained from the mobile phones found on the suspects, adding that the pictures in the mobile phones proved that the suspects were trained in the use of firearms and other terrorist manoeuvrings.
In another encounter that took place in the Gulshan-e-Iqbal locality, Madadgar 15 officials killed two alleged robbers.
Gulshan-e-Iqbal Station House Officer Aurangzeb Khattak said Madadgar 15 officials were conducting routine checking in Block 7 of the locality when they spotted two suspicious men on a motorcycle.
They were signalled to stop, but they opened fire on the law enforcers, who retaliated and arrested them in an injured condition.
The wounded suspects, who were identified as Tariq and Sadruddin, were taken to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre, where both of them were pronounced dead upon arrival.
Khattak said the police also seized two TT pistols, looted cash, mobile phones and two ladies handbags from the suspects. Further investigation is under way.
