‘Shaikh Ayaz was the poet of oppressed’

SUKKUR: The 96th birth anniversary of famous author and poet Shaikh Ayaz was observed at the Sindh University on Thursday. Addressing a function to commemorate, the birth anniversary of the great poet, Vice Chancellor Dr. Fateh Muhammad Burfat said Shaikh Ayaz continues to live among the hearts of the people of Sindh. Describing his literary acumen, the vice chancellor said his contribution to the Urdu and Sindhi poetry and prose is almost legendary. Ayaz painted the trials and travails, happiness and achievements of the common Sindhi in his poetry, Burfat said. Terming Ayaz’s poetry as a great national asset, he announced the establishment of Shaikh Ayaz Research Chair at the Sindh University and introduction of a course, ‘Shaikh Ayaz Studies’.

Noted writer Kazi Khadim said Ayaz was an intellectually-sound and prolific writer. Ayaz carved out his unique identity by non-conforming to the traditional poetic culture of his times, he added. Paying rich tributes to the poet for the diversity of his poetic themes, eminent scholar Jami Chandio said Ayaz had a unique style and was endowed with extraordinary courage to articulate what he believed in.

Famous poet Ishaq Samejo said Ayaz transcends time and represents all people and places. He was the kind of creative artist whose talent knew no bounds. The Chairman Department of Sindhi, Prof. Dr. Anwar Figar Hakro said there is a need for the youth to read and redefine Ayaz. Prof. Amar Sindhu equated Ayaz with Sindh.
