NAB arrests another man in betel leaf scam

NAB arrests another man in betel leaf scam

LAHORE: National Accountability Bureau (NAB) on Tuesday arrested another man in betel leaf custom duty scam.
According to a NAB spokesman, the accused identified as Rashid Shams caused Rs16.58 million loss to government exchequer by evading/miscalculating custom duty liable on import of betel leaf. The spokesman said NAB is probing a mega corruption scam of Rs2.6 billion regarding import and evasion of betel leaf custom duty. In accordance with Pak-Sri Lanka Trade Agreement, betel leaf is imported from Sri Lanka and India, but numerous private importers and import firms with the connivance of customs officers looted Rs 2.6billion by evading or miscalculating custom duty.
He said NAB had already arrested 10 people in this case. Accused Rashid Shams kept importing betel leaf during 2008-12 and managed to embezzle Rs 16.58m by paying far less duty in a government designated bank compared to the amounts shown on the hard copies of Goods Declaration (GDs). NAB would produce the accused on Wednesday (today) in an accountability court for taking physical remand.
