Lahore Blues record big win with Aizaz’s 11-wicket haul

KARACHI: Test discard Aizaz Cheema’s 11-wicket haul enabled Lahore Blues to overwhelm Lahore Whites by nine wickets on the third day of their Group I first round match of the Super Eight stage of Quaid-e-Azam Trophy here at the UBL Sports Complex on Tuesday.
The 38-year-old right-arm pacer, who has played seven Tests and 14 ODIs, picked 7-52 to dismiss Lahore Whites for 207 in their second innings after they had resumed at 151-5. It set a target of only 68 for Lahore Blues who achieved it in the tenth over for the loss of one wicket. Lahore Whites had conceded a heavy 140-run lead in the first innings. Cheema finished with excellent match figures of 11-95.
Medium pacer Bilawal Iqbal got 2-76, for a match tally of 6-118. Lahore Whites posted 141 in their first innings. In response, Lahore Blues made 281. In the other Group I meeting, here at NBP Sports Complex, Habib Bank Limited (HBL) were in deep trouble against Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited (SNGPL).
After being forced to follow-on, HBL were 67-1 in their second innings. They still need 243 runs to avert an innings defeat. After losing Imam-ul-Haq (5) early, trapped lbw by Asad Ali (1-21), skipper Ahmed Shehzad (36*) and Salman Afridi (24*) added 60 for the second wicket unbroken partnership.
Shehzad had hit eight fours from 52 balls. Afridi had hammered four fours from 54 balls.In response to SNGPL’s huge first innings total of 511, HBL resumed their first innings at 23-1 and were folded for 202 in 79.2 overs.
Ramiz Aziz was the only batsman to show some resolve on a wicket which had nothing special for bowlers. He scored unbeaten 59 off 116 balls, hitting eight fours. International opener Imam-ul-Haq, who hit a hundred on his ODI debut against Sri Lanka in the UAE recently, scored 39 off 100 balls. The left-hander, nephew of chief selector Inzamam-ul-Haq, smacked five fours in his patient knock.
Ahmed Shehzad (27) also failed to play a big innings. Shehzad struck five fours in his

56-ball sojourn at the wicket.Test leggie Yasir Shah was the pick of the bowlers with 4-50 in 23.2 overs. Off-spinner Iftikhar Ahmed, who has played a Test against England, claimed 3-19 from ten overs. Medium pacer Hussain Talat had figures of 2-23 in seven overs.
In a Group II outing, at Niaz Stadium, Hyderabad, Umar Akmal finally came out of his bad patch by hitting a spectacular 148 to guide United Bank Limited (UBL) to 325-8 in their second innings after they had conceded a 27-run first innings lead against Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC). They are now 298 runs ahead.
Umar, who had scored 192 in six innings in this event before this game, smashed 12 fours and two sixes before being caught and bowled by Fawad Alam (1-28).Umar added 168 for the second wicket with left-handed opener Umar Siddiq, who blasted 70 off 143 balls. Siddiq smashed eight fours in his solid knock.
Skipper Younis Khan, playing his first game of the season, once again failed to click and fell for only eight. He had scored one in the first innings. Left-arm spinner Kashif Bhatti got 5-102 in 24 overs.Earlier, in response to UBL’s first innings total of 252, SSGC resumed their innings at 273-8 and were folded for 279 in 87.5 overs.
Skipper Fawad Alam (124) added only one run to his overnight score before being removed by Test pacer Sohail Khan, who claimed 5-72 in 24.5 overs.
