We rarely get to see spring-related festivals in Karachi like Lahore has its traditional and colourful events to celebrate the arrival of the new season. However, the recently held annual Flower Show at Seaview Park, Karachi, was surely a feast for one’s eyes. The four-day event was organised by the Horticulture Society of Pakistan (HSP) in collaboration with Defence Housing Authority (DHA) and Cantonment Board Clifton (CBC). Nature enthusiasts, such as professional and amateur gardeners to different schools and organisations, who had won the flower competition in various categories, had their gorgeous work on display. While taking a stroll through the park surrounded by 75 species of seasonal and more than 48 species of annual flowers, it truly felt as if you were in the embrace of colours. Horticulture and gardening is often associated with stay-at-home spouses and senior citizens, but that should not be the case. With the fast-paced lives that we are living, it can be challenging to keep a single plant alive, let alone a garden. But, we also can’t ignore the fact that it is important to be around nature, which is why events like these are essential to encourage healthy trends in the society.
Another good thing about the show was that it had a wide variety of ideas to offer that you can incorporate in your homes or living space. Gardens and manicured lawns have always been an essential part of any home, be it castles or mansions or cosy cottages. No matter how fancy a building or skyscraper is, it will always look bleak without a touch of some greenery in the picture.
The festival incorporated garden tools and supplies to add something unique to your garden aesthetic, which can be personalised in any way you like. Pebble art, along with garden fountains are amazing additions that can bring life and motion to your yard. Fountains engage the senses with its soothing sound making the space a perfect place to unwind. Apart from the traditional style, there are more varieties available that one can opt for such as the stone waterfall or the Japanese bamboo fountain.
If there is no outdoor space, you can always try some hanging planters. Be it the gallery, the main entrance or in the living room, these are a perfect décor item for small homes and apartments.
Flowering plants require a lot of love and care, and if you hardly ever have time to spare time at work, adding a cute little cacti or succulent is still an option. Succulents can be grown indoors and only need a little sunlight from the window to survive.
In times when we are surrounded by portable devices and massive infrastructures, it’s important that we have a little bit of green, wherever we go. Spring is here and it’s the perfect time for you to take a moment and reconnect with nature.
