Live Updates: Nawaz Sharif returns to Pakistan

RAWALPINDI: Former prime minister Mohammad Nawaz Sharif and his daughter Maryam Nawaz have been sent to Adiala Jail on orders by the judge of the Accountability Court Mohammad Bashir.


01:03am - The Ministry of Law and Justice issued a notification saying that the accountability court would conduct trial of references against Nawaz and others at the Adiala jail.

Earlier, a notification was issued by the Islamabad administration declaring the rest house at the Sihala Police Training College in the capital as a sub-jail for keeping the two figures with immediate effect and until further orders.


11:40 pm - The Accountability Court has issued imprisonment warrants for former prime minister Nawaz Sharif and his daughter Maryam Nawaz. They would be sent to jail in Avenfield corruption case.


11:00pm -Ousted prime minister Nawaz Sharif would be shifted to Adiala jail while his daughter Maryam Nawaz will be sent to Seihala Rest House after the legal formalities.


10:36pm - At least 15 people were injured including several policemen when the police resorted to shelling to control the charged PML-N workers who pelted stones at the law enforcement personnel at Lahore’s Joray Bridge.


10:00pm - Nawaz Sharif and Maryam Nawaz were moved from Lahore via a special plane by the officials of National Accountability Bureau (NAB). 

A six-member NAB team is also present at the New Islamabad airport to take the PML-N leaders into custody for further legal formalities.


09:30pm - PMLN Quaid Nawaz Sharif  and his daughter Maryam Nawaz were arrested from the Haj lounge of Allama Iqbal airport.

 Earlier, the plane carrying ousted prime minister landed at Lahore airport after more than two of hours delay. The Federal Investigation Agency also seized passports of both the leaders.


09:00pm - The plane landed at Allama Iqbal International Airport at 8:45pm. The PML-N leaders convicted in Avenfield reference   would be arrested after immigration formalities.


07:55pm - PML-N President Shahbaz Sharif is leading a rally to Lahore airport to welcome ousted prime minister Nawaz Sharif and Maryam Nawaz amid massive crackdown against the party across the Punjab.

Senior PML-N leaders including Hamza Shabaz were in the container heading towards  airport.


7:25pm: The plane carrying Nawaz Sharif and his daughter have entered Pakistani airspace. It will land at Allama Iqbal International Airport Lahore around 09:00pm


06:00pm - Etihad Airways flight# EY243 in which Nawaz Sharif and Maryam Nawaz are traveling to Lahore has taken off from Abu Dhabi airport. 

The plane which was earlier scheduled to leave Gulf state at 03:10 was delayed due to technical reasons, airport officials told Geo News.


05:00 pm - A PML-N rally led by former chief minister Punjab Shahbaz Sharif has departed towards Lahore airport to welcome Nawaz Sharif and Maryam Nawaz.

Strict security measures  are in place due avoid any untoward situation as the  city braces to receive PML-N Quaid Nawaz Sharif. A large number of police personnel are deployed to handle the situation. 


04:00 pm - Interim Home Minister Shuakat Javed on Friday defended suspension of mobile phone services in Lahore and clarified that the steps taken by the provincial government were meant to ensure law and order in the city.

Briefing the media persons, the minister said the PML-N has not sought permission from the authorities for the rally to welcome their leaders, Nawaz Sharif and Maryam Nawaz.


03:30pm - Nawaz’s Sharif’s flight# EY243 from Abu Dhabi to Lahore has been delayed by two hours and will now land at Allama Iqbal Airport at 08:00pm, Geo News reported quoting airport officials. The plane was earlier scheduled to reach at 06:15pm.

The former PM and his daughter Maryam Nawaz have earlier today reached Abu Dhabi on their way to Lahore from London. 


02:45pm - Senior PML-N leader and former Railways minister Kh Saad Rafique and other party leaders have been put under house arrest for 30 days amid arrival of Nawaz Sharif and Maryam Nawaz later today.


12:30pm - Mobile phone services have partially been suspended on  request of the Punjab government in and around Walled City, Shadra, Barki/Hadyara, Lahore Airport, and Nawab Town areas of Lahore  to 'maintain the law and order'.

12:00pm - The Lahore High Court (LHC) has ordered the caretaker government to release the PML-N workers by 02:00 pm. During the proceedings, the court was informed that 141 persons were detained by the law enforcement agencies.

11:00am - Lahore police have increased the number of the security personnel from 2,500 to 10,000 to maintain law and order and to cope with any untoward situation in the provincial metropolis on Friday (today).

09:45am - Ousted prime minister Nawaz Sharif has released a video message ahead of his arrival in Pakistan, asking people to support him in his struggle which he said he is waging for the future of coming generations.


09:31am  - Pakistani officials in Abu Dhabi said that they have not been informed of NAB team in the Gulf state adding that under international laws Nawaz Sharif and Maryam Nawaz can not be arrested without completing legal formalities.


08:45am - The flight from London landed at Abu Dhabi airport earlier today where  the PML-N leaders would stay for seven hours before departing for Lahore.


08:00am - 10,000 police officers will be deployed across Lahore on Friday to ‘maintain law and order’ as the PML-N Quaid Nawaz Sharif arrive.


03:20am - PML-N leaders, including Abid Sher Ali, claimed that authorities  have launched crackdown on party workers who wanted to go to airport to welcome their leader Nawaz Sharif, saying hundreds of supporters including some local bodies' representatives have been detained.


02:40am - Security has also been beefed up at New Islamabad International Airport ahead of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif's arrival .

Airports Security Force (ASF) and law enforcing agencies reviewed the security arrangements. Special contingents of commandos and police officials have been deployed at the airport.


02:10am - National Accountability Bureau (NAB) Chairman Justice (r) Javed Iqbal has summoned an emergency meeting for today (Friday) in wake of  Nawaz Sharif and his daughter Maryam Nawaz's return to Pakistan to face jail term.

The meeting will review the overall  situation pertaining to the return of former prime minister.


01:00am - The National Accountability Bureau (NAB)  has arranged two helicopters to shift the father-daughter duo to the prison. One of the two choppers would be stationed at Lahore airport, while the other would be in Islamabad.

The NAB had formed a 16-member team to detain Sharif and Maryam, with the anti-graft body directing additional security personnel to remain on alert on Friday (today).

12: 30am - The United Kingdom (UK) police  arrested Maryam Nawaz’s son Junaid and Hussain Nawaz’s son Zikeriya in London for assaulting a protester outside the Avenfield Apartments.

The arrest comes shortly former prime minister Nawaz Sharif and his daughter Maryam Nawaz Sharif left for Heathrow Airport to board a flight for Pakistan.

Background 

Nawaz Sharif and Maryam Nawaz were convicted in Avenfield reference last Friday by the accountability court.  The Sharifs were in London to look after   ailing Begum Kulsoom Nawaz, when they were awarded imprisonment in the corruption case.

Sharif’s son-in-law Capt (retd) Mohammad Safdar, who was awarded one-year jail term, has already been arrested and shifted to Adiala prison.

The interim government and NAB stated that Nawaz Sharif and Maryam Nawaz would be arrested at the airport.

Earlier, in an emotional note, Maryam Nawaz tweeted that she had told her children to be brave to face the ongoing circumstances that do not seem to be favourable for Sharif family.

The caretaker information minister, Ali Zafar, said that the father-daughter duo will not be allowed to step out of the airport. “There is a court order against them,” he said. “It is our duty to arrest those who have been sentenced. We can’t let them roam around in Lahore.”

“Nawaz Sharif and Maryam Nawaz have the right to appeal,” he said. “This is a legal process. It is incorrect to say that only certain people are facing accountability.”

Meanwhile, the caretaker Punjab administration has stepped up its crackdown on PML-N’s workers.

More than 300 PML-N’s workers have reportedly been rounded up from different parts of Lahore. Arrests have also been made in Rawalpindi.
